Fresh From The Hopper
Providing You A More Realistic Description
We realized that doing an annual harvest report on only the first batch of hay from that season’s harvest was more of an initial analysis. It was great at giving us an early glimpse into the anticipated quality for the year, but not a guarantee of what each batch would be.
It was with that in mind that we wanted to provide you with a more realistic description of what the hay looks and feels like as each new batch arrives from the farm. Ensuring you have the most accurate information available when you place your order and allowing you to make informed choices with confidence!
Timothy Hay
Coarse Timothy Hay
Hay Description
Important to Note: Due to the cooler summer the farm had, some areas of the fields had minor stunted growth. Although this batch is consistent with the last, we want to express there may be pockets of shorter stems than others. The texture is still great, and our customers who love this hay will continue being happy with it.
Features
This year’s harvest, and therefore its batches, have thicker stems which makes it the perfect hay to help file down pesky overgrown incisors.
Our Recommendations
- If you’re looking for more leaf content, but would like to keep the stems and stalks we recommend two options:
- Try out the Medium Timothy Hay
- Grab some Soft Timothy (mostly leaves) to mix into your Coarse Timothy for some variety
- If you or your small pet are allergic to Timothy Hay, we recommend trying either our Soft Orchard Grass or Coarse Orchard Grass.
Medium Timothy Hay
Last Updated: November 2024
Hay Description
Features
There is a variety in texture with leaves, stems, and seed heads!
Our Recommendations
- If your small pet was loving the softer Medium Timothy we had in our 2022 harvest, then this batch of Medium Timothy may be a bit too coarse for you. We’d suggest ordering our Soft Timothy instead as it contains the soft leafy hay that they’re used to!
- If you or your small pet are allergic to Timothy Hay, we recommend trying either our Soft Orchard Grass or Coarse Orchard Grass.
Soft Timothy Hay
Last Updated: January 2025
Hay Description
This batch’s leaves are shorter in some areas due to stunted growth from cooler temperatures during the summer. There is some leaf crush within this batch, but it varies bale to bale.
Note: You may see some rogue stem content within this particular batch, which gives it a coarser texture than you or your small pet may be used to.
Features
So far, no weeds or thorns found in this batch. You can expect some stem content (as per the rogue stems!) and possible leaf crush.
Our Recommendations
- The majority of this hay is soft green blades, which makes it perfect for older bunnies and those with soft or weak teeth.
- If you’re looking for more stems, try a sample of our Medium Timothy Hay! It contains a great leaf content and a generous amount of stems and seed heads.
- If you or your small pet are allergic to Timothy Hay, we recommend trying either our Soft Orchard Grass or Coarse Orchard Grass.
Orchard Grass
Coarse Orchard Grass
Last Updated: January 2025
Hay Description
It does not contain many stems, contains minimal leaf crush, and minimal to no brown leaf.
Features
Great for filing down overgrown incisors!
Our Recommendations
- If you're looking for smoothing without an abundance of stems we recommend trying out our Soft Orchard Grass.
- This batch will allow our small pets who may need something coarser to help file those teeth down to achieve better dental health.
- On the other hand, if your pet has certain dental issues where typically they would need something much softer, it may be best to skip this batch and try our Soft Orchard Grass. Please consult with your veterinarian if you have questions about your small pets dental health.

Other Hays
Alfalfa Hay
Hay Description
Features
Perfect for rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas under 6 months of age to help them get the needed protein and nutrients they need to grow.
Our Recommendations
- Once your small pet is older than 6 months, we recommend you start to transition them to grass hay (such as Timothy or Orchard).
Mountain Grass
Hay Description
Our Mountain Grass blend can vary on growth and blend. This batch is heavy on Timothy, however we did see there are still other grasses in it to keep as much consistency for your fur baby as possible!
May contain shorter leaves and choppy pieces.
Features
Our Recommendations
- If you’re looking for a blended mix, we recommend ordering a small batch of Orchard Grass to mix in with the Mountain Grass since the Timothy Hay is very prevalent in this batch.
Oat Hay
Hay Description
This batch has long stems and a mixture of golden yellow and green in color. There is a bit less leaf content than previous batches, but seed heads are present!
Note: Some Chenopodium Album (also known as Goosefoot or Lamb’s Quarter) is found within this batch. This is a harmless weed that many wild and domestic rabbits like to snack on! It’s closely related to quinoa and is edible and completely safe to feed your rabbit and other small pets. Even humans can eat this!
Features
Great treat hay or daily diet hay, especially for finicky rabbits.
Our Recommendations
- This is a great hay for daily diet or treat hay.
- Try Oat Hay out for some variety in taste and texture, or for more finicky small pets!
