Fresh From The Hopper
Providing You A More Realistic Description
We realized that doing an annual harvest report on only the first batch of hay from that season’s harvest was more of an initial analysis. It was great at giving us an early glimpse into the anticipated quality for the year, but not a guarantee of what each batch would be.
It was with that in mind that we wanted to provide you with a more realistic description of what the hay looks and feels like as each new batch arrives from the farm. Ensuring you have the most accurate information available when you place your order and allowing you to make informed choices with confidence!

Timothy Hay

Coarse Timothy Hay
Hay Description
While this is a first cut, this particular batch is softer than we’ve seen recently with great leaf content. Good news, this batch contains no weeds and looks really clean with minimal to no dust.
The hay looks really good, and all of us at the warehouse are happy with the outcome of this batch’s color, fragrance, and overall quality.

Our Recommendations
- If you’re looking for more leaf content, but would like to keep the stems and stalks we recommend two options:
- Try out the Medium Timothy Hay
- Grab some Soft Timothy (mostly leaves) to mix into your Coarse Timothy for some variety
- While this batch is a first cut, if you are looking for more stem content:
- We recommend our Medium Timothy as it contains a bit more stem content which may be a good alternative if you need hearty stems!

- We recommend grabbing some of our Timothy Flowers to mix into your Coarse Timothy.
- If you or your small pet are allergic to Timothy Hay, we recommend trying either our Soft Orchard Grass or Coarse Orchard Grass.
Medium Timothy Hay
Last Updated: February 2025
Hay Description
We’ve noticed that this batch contains some “red” leaf. This just means it was growing for a longer period of time on the field to get the longest stems and leaves possible, which makes a few of the leaves turn a different color.
If you’ve ordered our previous batches of Medium Timothy, then it will all look the same to you! We’ve received some questions about the color and wanted to make note of it.
Features
There is a variety in texture with leaves, stems, and seed heads!
Our Recommendations
- If your small pet was loving the softer Medium Timothy we had in our 2022 harvest, then this batch of Medium Timothy may be a bit too coarse for you. We’d suggest ordering our Soft Timothy instead as it contains the soft leafy hay that they’re used to!
- If you or your small pet are allergic to Timothy Hay, we recommend trying either our Soft Orchard Grass or Coarse Orchard Grass.
Soft Timothy Hay
Last Updated: February 2025
Hay Description
There is a bit of brown leaf present, however, this is normal and usually found in our Soft Timothy Hay (this is due to keeping the hay growing on the field to maximize the growth of the hay).
Note: You may see some rogue stem content within this particular batch (but less than the previous batch - an improvement!), which gives it a coarser texture than you or your small pet may be used to.
Features
No brome or weeds found in this batch!. You can expect some stem content (as per the rogue stems!)
Our Recommendations
- The majority of this hay is soft green blades, which makes it perfect for older bunnies and those with soft or weak teeth.
- If you’re looking for more stems, try a sample of our Medium Timothy Hay! It contains a great leaf content and a generous amount of stems and seed heads.
- If you or your small pet are allergic to Timothy Hay, we recommend trying either our Soft Orchard Grass or Coarse Orchard Grass.

Orchard Grass

Coarse Orchard Grass
Last Updated: February 2025
Hay Description
It does not contain many stems, and has minimal leaf crush.
Features
Great for filing down overgrown incisors!
Our Recommendations
- If you're looking for smoothing without an abundance of stems we recommend trying out our Soft Orchard Grass.
- This batch will allow our small pets who may need something coarser to help file those teeth down to achieve better dental health.
- On the other hand, if your pet has certain dental issues where typically they would need something much softer, it may be best to skip this batch and try our Soft Orchard Grass. Please consult with your veterinarian if you have questions about your small pets dental health.
Soft Orchard Grass
Last Updated: February 2025
Hay Description
Features
It’s a good batch for those who like our Soft Orchard Grass! There are no noticeable changes from our previous batch to this batch.
Our Recommendations
- The majority of this hay is soft green blades, which makes it perfect for older bunnies and those with soft or weak teeth.
- If you’re looking for a more fibrous texture, try our Coarse Orchard Grass!
- If you or your small pet are allergic to Timothy Hay, we recommend trying either our Soft Orchard Grass or Coarse Orchard Grass.

Other Hays

Alfalfa Hay
Hay Description
Due to swatching, a process that cuts the alfalfa down in multiple parts to maximize drying and maturing, there is a mixture of leaves on and off the stem.
Features
You may see leaves fall from the stems or unattached, this is due to the swathing process and the drying out process - which is okay!
Perfect for rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas under 6 months of age to help them get the needed protein and nutrients they need to grow.
Our Recommendations
- Once your small pet is older than 6 months, we recommend you start to transition them to grass hay (such as Timothy or Orchard).
Mountain Grass
Hay Description
Features
Our Recommendations
- If you’re looking for a blended mix, we recommend ordering a small batch of Orchard Grass to mix in with the Mountain Grass since the Timothy Hay is very prevalent in this batch.
Oat Hay
Hay Description
This batch has long stems and a mixture of golden yellow and green in color. There is a bit less leaf content than previous batches, but seed heads are present!
Note: Some Chenopodium Album (also known as Goosefoot or Lamb’s Quarter) is found within this batch. This is a harmless weed that many wild and domestic rabbits like to snack on! It’s closely related to quinoa and is edible and completely safe to feed your rabbit and other small pets. Even humans can eat this!
Features
Great treat hay or daily diet hay, however because of the Alfalfa content, we would recommend this batch for those who are underweight or small pets under 6 months of age.
